Addressing dog and cat behavior issues in the Central New York area.

Amy Wallis, Ph.D. became interested in animal behavior through various volunteer activities at local shelters and rescue leagues. Her family always had pets, and her interest in behavior, both animal and human, led her to earn a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed specialized training in animal behavior consulting with Companion Animal Behavior, located in the Washington, D.C. area. After moving to central New York, she established her animal behavior consulting business with the goals of helping pets and their families resolve behavior concerns, minimize the need for animals to be euthanized or relinquished to shelters due to poor behavior, and educate the public on pet behavior.

Amy lives in
Baldwinsville, New York with her husband, and they share their home with three dogs and one cat, all rescued pets, with whom the have worked extensively to address various behavioral issues. Amy is certified by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (www.iaabc.org), where she is an active member, attending conferences and workshops related to animal behavior, providing mentoring for aspiring animal care professionals, and guiding member tutorials.  She also serves as a board member for Wanderers' Rest Humane Association (www.wanderersrest.org) and is a past board member of Sunshine Friends, a volunteer organization providing animal assisted activities and therapy (www.sunshinefriends.org).

While Amy spends her evenings and weekend working with animals and animal organizations, she also serves as an organizational psychologist leading the talent management function for a local company. Amy can be reached via email at Amy@MyPetHasIssues.com or by calling (315)303-4038.

Shannon K. Matthews, R.N. joined My Pet Has Issues in 2011 and is working toward certification as a certified animal behaviorist through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (www.iaabc.org). Her love of animals has spanned many years and interest in animal behavior came as a result of her first dog, Dexter, a troubled Yorkshire terrier. Shannon knows firsthand the challenges of working with reactive dogs and wishes to give pet owners in the greater Syracuse area a sense of hope when it comes to their pets with issues. She is heavily influenced by the work of behaviorists and trainers such as Brenda Aloff, Victoria Stilwell,  and Nick Dodman.

While she spends her free time working with behavior consulting clients and  volunteering  at Wanderers Rest Humane Association in Canastota, NY (www.wanderersrest.org), Shannon works full time as a registered nurse manager in surgical services at a local hospital. She lives in Syracuse and currently shares her home with Rocky, a recent adoptee from Wanderers Rest. She can be reached via e-mail at Shannon@MyPetHasIssues.com and looks forward to her continued journey to help people and animals alike.
